“Hello, stranger,” Debbie said brightly, setting her dinner menu aside. “We’ve missed you.”

They missed me!

“You’ve been avoiding us,” Tilly bluntly said.

Adelle’s stomach dropped. Is that what they assumed?

“What about you?” Adelle blurted, surprising herself. “Where was everyone at breakfast yesterday?” She felt the pain all over again.

Debbie and Tilly stared at Barbara who was tapping away on her phone. “I emailed you,” she said without looking up.

“To tell you we were eating breakfast on the deck, watching the sunrise,” Debbie added.

Oh.

Adelle felt foolish. Once again, she had jumped to conclusions. Why hadn’t she approached them on the deck instead of assuming they had abandoned her? The last two days of feeling sorry for herself could have been avoided.

She looked up. Everyone was looking at her.

Adelle took a deep breath. She told them about her granddaughter’s screen time challenge and why she didn’t have her phone with her. Barbara didn’t hold back. “A real tour host wouldn’t leave her phone at home,” she said.

Adelle looked down at her lap. Barbara was right. She picked away at the rest of her dinner in silence.
